A feather lei by Ethelreda Kahalewai. In ancient times, the feathers for these were obtained by trapping birds by placing a a sticky substance on tree limbs. The birds were released after a few feathers were plucked from them. Today many of these birds are extinct, having fallen victim to mosquito borne illnesses.
